Today we are going to talk about different sources for acquiring news. In today's discussion, I would like to hear your opinions on which form of news resources is better? Social media or traditional media?
Andrew
Social media is the future because it is convenient and more up to date.
Claire
A lot of people still prefer to rely on television or newspapers because the content from traditional media is more well-produced.
Claire:
I agree with Claire. First, it's wrong for Andrew to only boast about the merits of social media in interaction. In fact, due to the lack of professionalism and training, streamers or influencers can't offer valuable insights but some personal or radical comments. If you are looking for some objective and reliable content, then surely the user-generated content, like the posts on YouTube, is your last choice. Furthermore, social media doesn't boost your efficiency of obtaining information. Actually, it's highly likely that you have to struggle in the sea of such chaos of information for a long time before you realize that you can gain nothing meaningful but personal feelings and guesstimations, and in some extreme situations, bias and fraud. Still, the traditional media, such as newspapers with their well-trained staff, could guarantee the truthfulness of their news sources. Compared with social media, traditional media channels are still a much safer choice.
支持Andrew:
I prefer social media forms to traditional media. First, the user-generated content could be totally free of back-stage manipulation and corruption as such content is unpredictable. When there are no prepared scenarios or role plays, the content on the spot is certainly more reliable, or at least genuine. Compared with social media, the traditional media is often criticized for their deliberate bias and discrimination. For example, you can hardly imagine that the BBC will report positively about China's foreign polices in East Asia and Europe. Second, social media ushers in a variety of different voices, which makes it possible for users to avoid being swayed by the so-called mainstream media. In fact, overdosed exposure to just one source of media will only lead to brainwash or indifference while a wide range of choices brings more sophisticated and rational insights. Therefore, I believe social media forms prevail over traditional media.

Let's continue talking about consumer behavior. We have been discussing different ways people go about choosing what products to buy, and there are many potential sources of information and advice for consumers. In your opinion, which is the better strategy for making purchasing decisions relying on advice from friends and family, or depending on information from online sources? Why?
Claire
An internet search would be much more efficient.
Paul
My friends could have advised me better because they know my preferences and the kind of features that I am interested in. Consumers should get advice from the people around them to find the most suitable products.
因?qū)W點(diǎn)評(píng)
同意Claire:
1. For one thing, the online information is more diverse and therefore more trustworthy.
2. For another, online information performs far better in protecting one’s privacy and secrets.
Paul:
1. Although the best strategy for making purchasing decisions depends on the individual's preferences and needs, I tend to follow the recommendations of friends and family members. The main reason is that purchase advice from loved ones can carry a higher level of credibility.
2. More importantly, if my friends and family members have purchased the product before, their recommendations can be based on first-hand experiences, which surely makes my purchasing decision much wiser and more practical.

We've been discussing environmental policies, and one issue that has gained attention is whether short-haul flights should be banned. Many countries have good train systems that can replace short flights. What do you think? Should short flights be banned when there are other options like trains? Why or why not?
Claire
Short-haul flights should be banned if trains are a good alternative. Train stations are in city centers, so they are often more convenient and better for the environment.
Paul
Banning short-haul flights isn't the best solution. These flights help manage air traffic by connecting passengers to bigger airports.
I agree with Kelly that it is reasonable to ban short-haul flights. On the environmental front, banning short-haul flights could indeed reduce carbon emissions. Air travel is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, and short-haul flights, which are often less efficient than long-haul flights, can have a higher carbon footprint per passenger mile. If trains can provide a comparable service with a lower environmental impact, then from an ecological standpoint, the case for banning these flights is strong. As for Paul's concerns about short-haul flights connecting passengers to larger airports, this function of flights could also be replaced by alternative greener transportation means such as interurban railways or regional buses, which prove to be effective in many major cities such as New York City, London, and Shanghai.
On the environmental front, banning short-haul flights could indeed reduce carbon emissions; however, I agree with Paul on that a complete ban on short-haul flights might not be the most practical or effective solution. For one thing, many regions may lack the railway infrastructure to support all short trips. The effectiveness of train systems as a replacement for flights depends on their capacity, frequency, and coverage. In many areas, train services may not be as frequent or convenient as air travel, which could discourage travelers from switching to trains. Moreover, while trains can be a more environmentally friendly option, they may not always be the cheaper alternative. This could also deter airline customers from making the switch. In light of these considerations, a more balanced approach which involves providing incentives for travelers to choose trains and encouraging the development of more fuel-efficient aircraft will be more reasonable than simply banning short-haul flights.

Task 1
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It is disrespectful for tourists to take photos of strangers without their permission.
Use details and examples to support your opinion.
Personally, I think it's absolutely disrespectful to photograph strangers without asking. Here's why: First, privacy matters, and photographing someone without consent violates their right to control their own image. Imagine someone snapping a photo of us in a vulnerable moment—like when we're upset or working—and posting it online without consent. It can be very invasive. Second, with social media, images can circulate globally without our knowledge. This could harm others' reputation or safety. We never know who is looking at these pictures and what dangerous things may occur if they are in the wrong hands. Therefore, while taking pictures connects people, it is important for us to ask for permission first.

Task 1
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Watching sports programs on television is not a good use of time.
Use specific examples and details to support your opinion.
I don't agree with this argument because to me, watching sports on TV brings me happiness and enriches my life. Most importantly, these games connect me to others. Many large sports events, like the FIFA World Cup or the Olympics, are a common interest of a large number of groups. Families and friends often gather to watch games, creating shared memories and strengthening relationships. Also, sports serve as a stress-reliever. Cheering for a team can boost mood and provide a sense of belonging. It's true that it will be more enjoyable if everyone can watch live games, but that's just not possible. In this case, watching TV sports games serves as a convenient and accessible way for people to enjoy the charm of professional sports.

Task 1
Some students choose to enter university immediately after finishing high school. Others prefer to take time off before beginning their university classes. Which option do you think is better? Explain why.
Personally, I will choose to take a year off before embarking on university if conditions allow. First, a gap year will allow me to explore interests or careers before committing to a major. For instance, I'm interested in computer science, but I'm not sure computer programmer is the right career for me. I could use the year interning at a tech startup to figure out if coding or other responsibilities for that job is something I really enjoy. And also, I can try out several other interns and part-time jobs to compare. I think after a year of exploration, I will be able to have a more focused university experience.
